How Coastal Freight Is Priced

A ferry, RoRo or barge price depends on the size of the load, how it travels and when. These are the factors behind every quote.

Price factors

What goes into the price

Length on deck

Ferries and RoRo ships sell deck space by length. A vehicle or trailer is usually priced on its overall length in feet, so the cab and trailer together count. Units that are taller or wider than standard can cost extra.

Accompanied or unaccompanied

If a driver travels with the vehicle, the price covers the driver's passage too. An unaccompanied trailer is dropped at the terminal and collected at the other end, which adds terminal handling but frees the driver.

Weight

Heavy loads may need a specific vessel, a barge or special handling, and very heavy pieces can be priced on weight rather than length.

Dangerous goods

Fuel, batteries, gases and many chemicals must be declared. They can add a surcharge, limit which sailings can carry the cargo and need extra paperwork.

Reefer power

A refrigerated trailer or container needs a power connection during the voyage. Carriers usually charge for it, and not every sailing has spare plugs.

Port and fuel surcharges

Ports and terminals charge their own fees, and carriers add fuel surcharges that change with fuel prices. A quote should show them separately from the base rate.

Season

Each corridor has busier times of year, when space is tighter. Booking early keeps more options open.

Pickup and delivery

Truck legs to and from the ports are priced separately, by distance and size, with extras such as a liftgate, an appointment or a permit for an oversize load.

Why there are no prices here

Rates change with fuel prices, the season and the space left on each sailing, and no two shipments are the same size, weight and timing. A price published here would be out of date, or wrong for most shipments.
