RoRo Shipping

Roll-on / roll-off shipping for vehicles, machinery and wheeled cargo.

RoRo, short for roll-on/roll-off, means cargo is driven or towed onto the vessel, secured on deck and driven off at the destination, with no crane involved. It is the usual way to ship cars, trucks, trailers and wheeled machinery by sea between the mainland and Hawaii, Puerto Rico and Alaska.

We quote RoRo shipments for single vehicles, fleets and wheeled equipment, and we can quote the truck legs to and from the ports. Ferries Freight arranges the transport through licensed carriers and vessel operators; we don't operate vessels.

Preparing a vehicle

Carriers usually ask for a low fuel level, no personal items inside, working brakes and a set of keys. They inspect the vehicle when they receive it and note any existing damage, so photos taken before drop-off are useful.

For a financed vehicle, expect to show the title or registration and the lienholder's written permission to ship it. We tell you what the carrier on your route asks for.

Vehicles are usually dropped off at the port terminal and collected there at the other end. If you can't get the vehicle to the port yourself, we can quote a truck to take it.

Machinery and wheeled equipment

Self-propelled or towable equipment can usually travel RoRo. Send the dimensions, the operating weight and whether it runs, because equipment that doesn't run, or runs on tracks rather than wheels, needs different handling.

Very large or heavy pieces may need specialized equipment to load them, or a barge instead. We check this when we review the request.

Several vehicles at once

Dealers, rental companies and fleets often move several vehicles together. Send the list with the type of each vehicle and the dates they are ready, and we review options for the group rather than one vehicle at a time.

How a quote request works

  1. Step 1: Send the details

Origin and destination, what the cargo is, its dimensions and weight, and your sailing window.

  2. Step 2: We review the options

We check which ferry, RoRo or barge services and port pairs fit your cargo and dates.

  3. Step 3: You get a quote

The quote lists the sailing options and what each one includes.

  4. Step 4: We arrange the booking

We book the option you choose with the carrier and tell you which documents it needs.
